About Moodlerooms Research
The History of Moodlerooms

Moodlerooms, Inc., was founded in 2005 by former educators who wanted to make quality teaching and learning a possibility for everyone. As a result, Moodlerooms provides an open, accessible and flexible learning management platform to all clients. Shortly after inception, Moodlerooms began providing services for major corporations like Cisco, school districts like Frederick County Public School and universities like Louisiana State University and the California State University System.

In November 2009, Moodlerooms launched its comprehensive learning management platform called joule®, which combined the rich functionality and global innovation of open-source Moodle with Moodlerooms’ standards-based enhancements and enterprise-level services.

In the summer of 2010, Moodlerooms migrated its clients to the largest Moodle Cloud in the world, supported in a world-class data center that is owned and operated by our partner, Dell. The Dell Services Cloud provides access to additional resources and allows us to add capacity on demand, enabling customers to scale as much and as often as needed. Shortly after, Moodlerooms announced version 2.0 of joule®. Built on Moodle 2.0, the most prolific update of Moodle to date, joule 2.0 offers more extensive functionality, including a social media tool and personalized learning designer, which allows for personalization of course material.

The company is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland with an office in Indianapolis, Indiana. Moodlerooms’ staff has more than doubled in size since 2010 to account for its increase in clientele and now has more than 90 employees in 18 locations across the globe. As Moodle continues to grow, so does Moodlerooms; providing customers with an ever evolving dual roadmap that ensures constant progress based on community input.

Moodle: Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment

Moodle Partnership

Moodle is an online course management system delivered as a software package. Designed using pedagogical principles, Moodle provides a flexible environment for learning communities and is designed to support a social constructionist framework for education. Due to its robust set of teaching and learning tools, Moodle has become the most widely used open source LMS in the world. With more than 48 million users in 205 countries, Moodle supports over 80 languages, and has a thriving community of innovators, educators and developers contributing and enhancing the code each and every day. As a result, Moodle users have access to a robust feature set that allows for the delivery of engaging and effective online learning.

The Moodle package is open-source and freely available for anyone to download; however, Moodle users must host, support and maintain the software themselves. That’s where Moodlerooms comes in. As a Moodle partner, Moodlerooms provides institutions with enterprise-level services wrapped around Moodle, to deliver the most reliable and sustainable learning management system possible, without the stress of maintaining an LMS. As a Moodle Partner, we contribute development, testing, community engagement and 10% of our revenue back to support the continued evolution of the open-source Moodle project. In return, Moodlerooms benefits from priority access to upgrades and patches to ensure our clients are always on the most stable and secure code base available.
