Moodle Trademark Protected by Google AdWordsJul 11, 2008 11:00 AM EDT
Google uses Digital Millennium Copyright Act to stop abuse of the Moodle trademark
The use of Moodle in conjunction with services (hosting, training, customizations and support) is limited to the Moodle Partner network. Google has already, and will continue to, deactivate links for companies that are infringing on the Moodle trademark.
This will affect a number of unauthorized companies that have been advertising commercial services in Google AdWords with the keyword “Moodle.” The announcement came after Moodle applied to have the Moodle name protected under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This will not affect non-commercial users referencing, using, or promoting Moodle. The policy for using the Moodle logo and name is stated below:
If you are not offering Moodle commercial services (such as Moodle hosting, consulting, installation, training etc) then, yes, you can use the logo (we encourage it!).
However if you are advertising/promoting/marketing Moodle commercial services then you need to seek permission from us, via this Moodle Helpdesk, as the Moodle logo contains the Moodle trademark.
“Moodlerooms applauds the efforts of the Google AdWords and Moodle teams to protect the Moodle trademark,” said Martin Knott, CEO of Moodlerooms. “The Moodle Partners contribute time, resources and finances to help sustain the Moodle Foundation. This effort will go a long way in protecting the Moodle name and clearly recognizes the work of the Moodle Partners in promoting and supporting Moodle.”
