Moodlerooms on the Cloud
Moodlerooms delivers our solutions on the largest Moodle cloud in the world, supported in our new world-class hosting facilities provided by Dell Cloud Services, formerly Perot Systems of Plano, Texas.
Each client site is hosted in an industry-leading, clustered, load-balanced and redundant environment that provides a targeted 99.99% uptime and less than two-second average server response time.
One of the biggest benefits of cloud computing is constant access to additional resources. This means your organization is not tied to the limits of hardware. The Dell Services Cloud allows Moodlerooms to instantly add capacity, providing unlimited resources to allow your program to scale as much and as often as needed.
Additionally, our experienced IT team continuously monitors and maintains your instance throughout the entire length of the contract. As an official Moodle Partner, Moodlerooms receives priority access to updates and patches. If a new security patch or code update becomes available, our team immediately applies it following a rigorous testing process to ensure stability and security. This process does not require any downtime or cause disruption to our customers.
Physical Security
The Moodlerooms Dell hosting architecture is physically secured through the following methods:
- 24x7 armed security and CCTV surveillance
- Multi-level security card readers with battery backup
- Biometric scanning
Data Security
Technology alone cannot ensure compliance with security standards – formal policies, well-defined processes and on-going communication between all stakeholders are critical. Moodlerooms and Dell’s vertical expertise with HIPAA, FERPA, GLBA, CA SB 1386, Sarbanes Oxley and Basel 2 provides clients with the highest level of data security and protection. Dell’s experience in regulatory compliance extends beyond a “keep the bad guys out” mentality of information assurance to more exemplary goal of “keep the good stuff in.”
Dell and Moodlerooms regularly conduct vulnerability testing of the cloud environment to run all known attacks within the virtual infrastructure for the purpose of discovering and remedying any weaknesses or threats. The Dell Services data center is also SAS 70 Type II certified.
System Security
Password Protection
User login information is kept secure through MD5, a 32-digit hexadecimal number that provides solid, irreversible cryptographic protection against hackers. MD5 hashes can be further strengthened by applying a salt to make them unbreakable. Additionally, administrators can enforce effective password creation by enabling password policies that require user passwords to meet specified criteria.
Virus Scanning
Moodlerooms uses open-source ClamAV on its servers to scan, isolate and delete any corrupt files that are uploaded to joule. This helps prevent users from accidentally downloading viruses to their computers.
Authentication
Moodlerooms supports more than 15 methods of authentication against external sources, including LDAP, IMAP, CAS, Shibboleth, POP3 and RADIUS. When users attempt to log in to joule, their credentials are checked against the remote authentication system via a secure connection. The users are then redirected to joule and granted access to their courses.
Roles-Based Access
joule offers a sophisticated user-role system for controlling access to content and delegating administration.
- Role - Identifier of the user's status or level of authorization
- Capability - Description of a particular feature associated with a role
- Permission - Value assigned to a capability for a particular role
- Context - The "space" in joule with which the components are associated
Testimonial
"We had poor communication with our previous LMS and host, so we really needed a company to host our Moodle LMS that would help us and had a high level of communication. By using Moodlerooms’ managed open-source solution, we have someone to provide support to us if we need it. If there is an error or something that we have difficulty correcting, we can simply open a support ticket with Moodlerooms and they will investigate and solve the issue for us. If we were self-hosting the application, we would be responsible for doing this on our own.”
