COSN - Implementation Study #3: Moodle
Posted January 17th, 2008 by Steve Hargadon
"While the Consortium for School Networking is vendor-neutral and tries to help inform technology decision-making in K-12 environments by focusing on the choices available, there are times when examining a specific product can be very helpful. Such, we believe, is the case with Moodle. While this report is technically not vendor-specific (since Moodle is “Open Source” software it does not require going through a commercial vendor), we believe that the widespread and often enthusiastic response to Moodle by K-12 institutions creates a need to briefly define what Moodle is, to what it can do, and to give some specific examples of how it is being implemented..."

Government and Non-Profit Case Studies
The Kansas, Nevada, Ohio, and Texas Transition to Teaching Project (Project KNOTtT), a federally funded partnership of higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profits, partners and school districts, is addressing the national issue of teacher quality by taking on the challenge of retaining teachers in high-need, hard-to-staff school districts across the nation.
Project KNOTtT has saved an estimated $100,000 by using the services provided by Moodlerooms. “Hiring Moodlerooms as our application service provider has alleviated the need to hire a full-time Moodle administrator or contractor to maintenance and support a local Moodle installation,” said Gimbert. “The focus of our staff is constructing processes and methods that support an online learning community that is based on empirical research data and industry best practices.”
